The Artist Says:

"My heart beats fast at the way light plays across beautiful forms...the planes of the face, the petals of a flower, the sharp, clean edge of a sunstruck wave, building or tree, and the soft diffusion of light through the atmosphere. The subtlety and brilliance revealed by light is absolute magic. Translating this light into strokes of color--like notes played on a solo piano--with a very conscious plan to amplify the harmony of the underlying design--like the structure of a melody--is both humbling and joyful. The resulting symphony is the meaning behind each painting, which goes beyond the sum of its parts."

Collectors Say:

"I bought your painting to give my daughter so it now hangs in her living room in Brooklyn, N.Y. and she loves it and the way you use light." (Mrs. M.T., Redlands, CA)

Dealers Say:

"Mary characteristically draws the attention into the foreground of each image, bathing it in light, while shadows warmly darken her backgrounds. During the editing of this post, one of our dear customers fell in love with "Orchids and Hydrangeas" and decided to give it a good home!" (Chemers Gallery, Tustin, CA)

Biography

"My heart beats fast at the way light plays across forms...the petals of a flower, the planes of the face, or the sharp, clean edge of a sunstruck wave, building or tree. It is enthralling to see light softly diffuse through the atmosphere or illuminate the poetic drape of a flower stem or the graceful pose of the body. This light is like sound, harmoniously organizing shapes and shadows and edges into a beautiful melody. The paint strokes are the notes, played with joy. This final symphony of painted light always leaves me surprised, humbled, and seeking the next beautiful song."

Mary is a traditional representational painter, inspired by the profusion of beauty in people, still life, and landscapes. Her richly colored, dramatic pastel and oil paintings are usually completed alla prima - all at once in one session - in order to capture the immediacy and poetry of her subjects.

Mary was born in Salt Lake City in 1962 and grew up in Oregon and Washington. After receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Washington, she worked for several years as cartographer designing maps. A wonderful journey as the mother of triplets followed and later, a deeper pursuit into the world of fine art and the study of classical representational painting.

She has studied at The Watts Atelier, The Gage Academy of Art and with several noteworthy artists. She is a signature member of the Pastel Society of America, the Northwest Pastel Society, and the United Society of Pastel Artists. Mary maintains a studio in Laguna Beach, California and is represented by Chemers Gallery, Tustin, California. She shows her work in the summer in Laguna Beach at the prestigious Festival of Arts and at the Sawdust Festival. Her award winning work can be found in private collections in the U.S., Europe, Asia, and Australia.
